Annual Review of Student Progress (ARSP)

ARSP Overview

Annually, each student meets with their advisor to review progress and aims for the upcoming year, and the faculty as a whole review student progress.  

In the Spring quarter, Ph.D. in Education students are reviewed by their faculty advisor during the Annual Report of Student Progress (ARSP). The ARSP is conducted with your stage of progress in mind. Your advisor understands that at this point in the program you are taking courses and searching for the research topics that will engage you in the years ahead. We will be sending you a form in which you will be given a series of prompts which you can either answer or consider in preparation for your meeting with your advisor (your choice). The goal of this is to provide a guide for your conversation and encourage mentorship. 
The ARSP is an opportunity for faculty and students to:

• have a checkpoint for progress for the year
• take an opportunity to discuss your career goals and intellectual identity
• consider ways to make adjustments in areas needing improvement, support, or change
• discuss milestones - for first years, progress on the year 1 poster and prepare for year 2 expectations
• share and discuss approaches to maintaining a work-life balance

Examples of items that can be included in the ARSP mentorship discussions:

• courses 
• GSR/TA/Fellowship experiences
• lab meeting participation
• PD/Job Talks/Service attendance/participation
• other scholarly activities (conferences attended, proposals written, literature read, etc.)
• applications for fellowships/grants
• mentorship/ advising questions
• possible summer plans and goals for the next academic year

The annual review is an essential program activity to ensure students’ progress through the program is supported and positive. Students are expected to maintain satisfactory performance throughout the program to avoid academic actions by the school or the university. If progress is not deemed satisfactory, the Associate Dean and Program Director will work with the student and advisor(s) to develop an action plan.  

Reviews are conducted first with the advisor, then the area faculty, then the full senate faculty. Graduate Affairs Staff will distribute the ARSP feedback to each student directly.
