Summer Teaching Assistantships

In Spring quarter, the Ph.D. Program Director sends out a call for Summer Session Teaching Assistant applications. This is an opportunity for eligible doctoral students to be provided with additional summer funding and an opportunity to get experience in course planning and development through the mentorship of SoE faculty. A summary of eligibility and key points is provided below (additional eligibility requirements may apply):
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing (i.e. timely progress with program milestones and program course requirements, within normative time to advancement and time to degree).
  • Applicants must have a GPA of 3.1 or higher, with no more than two incomplete grades.
  • The Summer Session Office is the hiring department for summer TAs. Summer session will only hire TAs for a course if it meets a minimum enrollment of 35 students.
  • You can find the Summer Session academic calendar here.
  • Most of the TA opportunities will be in the MAT program with a few opportunities in our undergraduate program.
  • The Ph.D. Program Director assists with placement of TAs for summer session courses based on student availability and fit with course.
  • Given the limited availability for Summer TAships, priority for summer session placement is as follows, (a) students who received a diversity recruitment fellowship AND were guaranteed summer funding; (b) students who do NOT have any other type of employment on campus e.g. GSR or TAship in another school. The School of Education tries to ensure that opportunities for funding are distributed equally. Students who have priority based on the above stated standards are given at least one TA placement in either SS1 or SS2.
  • Summer TAs work 120 hours for a total of 6 weeks, which equates to 20 hours per week. If the course starts a week late, you will be required to work 24 hours/week for 5 weeks. Please check with Ph.D. Program Director for salary and pay schedule
  • Students are allowed to hold two TAships in one single summer session or across the two summer sessions.
  • Students are eligible to receive Childcare Reimbursement during the summer. The limit for summer is $1,100 irrespective of how many sessions you TA'd. The Summer Session office processes these forms since they are the hiring unit.
  • Summer Teaching Assistant appointments do not count towards the total quarters of TA eligibility as defined by UC Irvine.

Other than the students who have priority, there is no guarantee that Ph.D. students will receive a placement or that placement can be made in requested courses. Students will be notified in early to mid-June or when the course has reached a minimum of 35 enrolled students in order to hire a TA, whichever comes first.
